A typo has led to the election of the wrong man to a finance board in Derby, Conn.
James J. Butler was the highest vote-getter, winning 1,526 votes for the 10-member Board of Apportionment and Taxation, which monitors the town’s finances.
However, his father, 72-year-old James R. Butler, was the candidate nominated by Democrats. The News Times of Danbury and New Haven Register report that he said he wants the job and that his son is not interested in public office …

A PRESS release was received at Business Day this week, with a correction, to wit: & The Conference of Parties (COP 17) … Climate Change & Sustainability Services at Ernst & Young. Please note in the recent release distributed on behalf of Ernst & Young, the word ‘anthropomorphic’ was incorrectly used in the first paragraph and should have been ‘anthropogenic’ … ‘Studies indicate that the anthropogenic climate change may result in a sustainability crisis for future generations.’ We regret the error.& The Insider is always one to give credit where it is due, so well done for the correction and regretting the error. Anthropomorphic means & ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human& whereas anthropogenic means & caused or produced by humans& Although the arguments for the existence of climate change itself sometimes take on such malicious ferocity you’d think greenhouse gas was somebody’s much disliked mother-in-law.

There’s a new mea culpa culture at the Financial Times. Weeks after the newspaper printed the word “Murdock” on a front-page sub headline about the News Corp boss’s appearance at the media select committee, the repercussions at the pink’un go on. Martin Dickson, the deputy editor, who was in charge on the fateful night, summoned the page one editor into his office and gave him a first official warning for not spotting the typo that appeared in the first edition. When the production editor heard about the bollocking, he told Dickson that he was also to blame – so he got a written warning too. News then reached the hapless sub editor who actually wrote the word, so he went to see Dickson – and got an official warning as well. If the guy who sells the first editions outside Waterloo station wants to pop into the FT offices … you can probably guess the rest.

This article was taken down on 1 September 2011 because it incorrectly suggested that three members of Financial Times staff were given written warnings in relation to a front page sub-headline in which Rupert Murdoch’s name was misspelled.

So the warnings were verbal? Or no warnings were given? And how did the Monkey get its facts wrong?
