Sorry for calling you a ‘union mob boss’

In articles we wrote and published in the Toronto Sun and its website on Dec. 18, 2010 and Jan. 2, 2011, entitled "TTC Union Needs to be Curbed" and "Rob Ford's big fight: Levy," we stated that Bob Kinnear, the President of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 113, is a union mob boss.

We acknowledge this statement is untrue and we retract it without reservation. We regret this error and apologize to Mr. Kinnear. The Sun did not intend to imply that Mr. Kinnear is in any way, shape or form associated with organized crime.

Imaginary head butting

A photo caption June 10 incorrectly stated Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Councillor Carolyn Parrish “butted heads” over the mayor’s legal defence fund. McCallion was not present during the debate, having declared a conflict of interest in the matter. Link

Bad for business

A series of articles concerning illegal sales of tobacco products published in the Sun (including its webpage) on Friday, April 9, included photographs and video footage of the “DKs” and “Putters” tobacco products manufactured by Grand River Enterprises Six Nations Ltd.
The Sun wishes to clarify that it did not intend to suggest that these products are in any way illegal or that there is anything illegal or improper about production or sale of these products in circumstances that are permitted under Canadian law.
The article was intended to highlight concern over the sale of cigarettes that are illegally distributed in violation of Ontariops Ontario’s Tobacco Tax Act. Link

Not a stripper

A photograph in Thursday’s Toronto Sun incorrectly identified a woman as ex-stripper Suwalee Iamkhong leaving a hearing at the Immigration and Refugee Board. The Sun apologizes to the woman (who requested her name not be used) for any embarrassment.

A very important correction

When newspaper writers make a silly mistake, itâ€™s our policy to issue a correction. So please consider this a correction to Wednesdayâ€™s story about gold medallist Lindsey Vonn and the other top Olympic beauties. Somehow, Russian speed skater Yekaterina Malysheva was left off the list.
Maybe it was because the photo of Malysheva was mistaken for a shot of Canadian actress and puck bu… errr, hockey aficionado Elisha Cuthbert, but whatever the case, we regret the error. And weâ€™ve suddenly become even bigger fans of speed skating. Link

For the non-hockey fans out there, he was calling Cuthbert a “puck bunny.”

Share a name, become a “dead drug dealer”

A photograph published in the Toronto Sun Friday incorrectly identified a person who has the same name as a dead drug dealer. The photo showed Shawn James, winner of a Harry Jerome Award in 2005 and a social worker with UrbanPromise Toronto, a Christian-based community initiative working with children, youth and single mothers.
He is very much alive and the error raised concern among the kids he works with at Thistletown Baptist Church.
James “operates an after-school program for children at Kipling and Finch Aves. and he has no criminal background,” wrote UrbanPromise executive director Brett McBride.
The story, however, was about the trial for the accused killer of another man named Shawn “Juice” James, slain in 2007. The Sun apologizes for the error.

A supporter of gay rights, but not gay

Former minor pro hockey player Justin Bourne is an advocate of gay rights and outspoken about the challenges athletes face when “coming out” in pro sports.
His passion for the cause stems in part from the fact that he has a gay family member and from some of the attitudes he saw during his own pro career.
Bourne is not gay himself, however, as was suggested in yesterday’s Sun.
“I wouldn’t say I’m a crusader but I’m definitely an advocate of the cause,” Bourne said yesterday. “I don’t see a problem speaking out about it. But as my fiancee would tell you, I’m definitely not gay.”
Bourne, who has written about the topic on his blog and for USA Today, did just that in the aftermath of Brian Burke’s son Brendan’s admission that he was gay.
In his reaction, Bourne applauded the elder Burke’s positive response as potentially being an important step in furthering society’s acceptance of gays.
“About 40 or 50 years ago, guys as manly as Brian Burke were the exact reason gay men are uncomfortable coming out,” Bourne told Yahoo.com. Link

Apology

A story in the November 9 edition of the Toronto Sun quoted several unsupported allegations about “alleged misspending” and “influence peddling” involving the Toronto Port Authority. The Toronto Sun has no knowledge and is aware of no evidence to substantiate those allegations. The article also wrongly cited claims that the TPA “cost taxpayers $10 million a year” when in fact it has been profitable in 2008 and 2009 and pays a royalty to the federal government. The Sun apologizes for the errors, innuendo and any injury or inconvenience that may have resulted from the publication of the article. Link

Apology

A headline on an article in the September 29 edition of the Toronto Sun concerning contract work done by Courtyard Group for the Ontario provincial government was both inaccurate and unfair. In fact, the Toronto Sun has no knowledge, or any reason to believe, that Courtyard acted improperly in any way in agreeing to perform, and in performing, work for the Ontario government or its agencies. The Sun apologizes for any injury or inconvenience. Link

Don’t upset the multiple murderer

Convicted multiple murderer Gregory J. McMaster has complained about an article published in the Toronto Sun on June 4, 2008, under the headline “Serial killer wants clean slate.”
McMaster is serving time in Fenbrook Institute in Gravenhurst for killing three Canadians and a Minnesota police officer in 1978. He denies he is a serial killer and says he was never so described during his trials. Further, he says he does not want a clean slate, only that he filed for a judicial review in an attempt to have erroneous information removed from his Correctional Service of Canada files. Link

Toronto Sun apologizes for “stupid” headline

A headline on page one of the Toronto Sun yesterday was both inaccurate and misleading. In fact, as the story reported, the mother of a boy involved in a high school fight in Keswick said her son “said something stupid.” She did not say nor imply he was stupid. The Sun regrets the error and apologizes to the boy and his family. Link

We have egg on our face over yesterday’s front page about new “street eats” in the city. Our graphic contained numerous errors, including misspelling Eglinton Ave. We apologize to our readers and cartographers everywhere. Link

Wrong Ravi

In an article with singer Sarah McLachlan which ran in Tuesday’s Toronto Sun, McLachlan said she would be performing with Ravi Shankar at Roy Thomson Hall on Oct. 18.
However, the Ravi Shankar in question is not the legendary sitarist Ravi Shankar but in fact yoga master Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a noted spiritual and humanitarian leader and the founder of the international Art of Living Foundation which is active in over 140 countries. Shankar has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Shankar will also be appearing on Oct. 17 as part of A Celebration of Youth at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The evening will feature a dinner, silent auction, guest speakers and entertainment.
On Oct. 18, McLachlan will be performing an acoustic set with special guest Meaghan Smith as part of the Mind Body & Soul Experience 2008. Proceeds from the event will go to support Youth Empowerment Canada. Tickets, $55, $125, $200, $250, are available through the website Youthempowermentcanada.org.

Victim, not criminal

A photo on Pg. 5 in the Friday edition identified fraud victim Richard Rand as the man guilty of 190 counts of fraud. The Sun apologizes to Mr. Rand for any embarrassment this may have caused. Link
