Also, a story in some editions Monday on Page 2 about Osama bin Laden’s life said bin Laden died in the lawless badlands of Pakistan along the Afghanistan border. Bin Laden was killed in a house in Abbottabad, north of Islamabad. The story also repeated a paragraph that had some garbled sentences.

A timeline in the main news section Monday incorrectly stated how many siblings Osama bin Laden had. He was one of 54 children of a Saudi construction magnate. Link

In some of yesterday’s editions, it was incorrectly stated that Osama bin Laden’s wife was killed during the attack on his compound in Pakistan. She was not killed.

Headline erred on quote: In Tuesday’s editions, a headline with a story about congressional reaction to the killing of Osama bin Laden said “Quitman says ‘Evil has met his maker.’” The quote in fact came from U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, a Republican who is from Quitman.

Update May 5:

A picture on Tuesday with an article about the response of New Yorkers to the death of Osama bin Laden was published in error. As the caption indicated, it showed a ceremony in Manhattan that included a reading of the names of Holocaust victims; the event was not connected to Bin Laden’s death. Link

An article in the April 28 edition about students protesting tuition hikes incorrectly identified a person as Robert Bhavin, 21, a senior political science major from Edison. His name is actually “Bhavin Patel.”

Paul Mulshine's column on Thursday about airport screening procedures overstated Capt. Chesley Sullenberger's criticism of the Transportation Safety Administration. While Sullenberger called the agency's efforts to combat terrorism inefficient, he did not, as the column said, call "on Americans to "reject the expedient and barely adequate' efforts of the TSA."

An article on Wednesday about the Greater Newark Holiday Fund incorrectly described Sharon K. Wells as an employee at East Orange General Hospital. She is an unpaid volunteer there. In addition, Wells was the victim of one abusive marriage, not two, and the man who attempted to set her on fire was not her boyfriend. She only knew him a short time.

An article yesterday was unclear about the status of a Montclair shop, Dressing for Pleasure. The township shut down its basement "dungeon," used by a private club for bondage parties. The store, however, remains open.

Sorry for saying you beat your wife

A story Sunday about Vietnam veterans counseling veterans of the Iraq war said incorrectly that at one point Vietnam veteran Vic Griguoli had physically abused his wife. In fact, Griguoli, 63, said his relationship with his family suffered because of his untreated emotional problems but he did not physically abuse his wife.

A story Sunday about a casting call for the game show "Deal or No Deal" in East Hanover erroneously stated that Kathy Shasa, of Rockaway, named her son Duncan because of her love of Dunkin’ Donuts. It was actually her cat that was named Duncan. Shasa’s last name was also misspelled as "Shaysa."

In some editions yesterday, a headline referred to a tuition management company that filed for bankruptcy as a “collection firm.” Tuition Program Inc. is not a collection agency.

A review Sunday of the book “Loot: The Battle over the Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World” contained several errors. Randy Mehrberg is not “an energy tycoon.” He is a spokesman for Exelon Corp., an energy firm, whose CEO, John Rowe, kept an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus in his office; it was Rowe who donated the sarcophagus to a Chicago museum. The Metropolitan Museum’s Lydian Hoard was returned to Turkey, not Italy. Former Getty Museum curator Marion True has pleaded not guilty to charges in Italy, not Greece, for actions supposedly taken in Greece. She has not been convicted of any crime. Napoleon did not “lift” the Mona Lisa from the Italians. He took the Mona Lisa with him wherever he traveled as emperor, but it was already in French hands, having been bought by King Francis I, who gave Leonardo da Vinci a place at his court near the end of the artist’s life. Moreover, the newspaper inadvertently jumped the gun on the review; the book will be published in November.

Due to an editing error, the For Collectors column in Saturday’s Abode section reported incorrectly that the 2009 Double Eagle gold coin would sell for $20. While the coin will have a $20 denomination, it will contain an ounce of 24-karat gold and will sell for approximately $900, depending on the value of gold at the time it is issued.

A book reviewer on Sunday of “Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War,” by Patrick J. Buchanan, stated that Hitler wanted the return of the city of Dresden. In fact, it was the Polish city of Danzig Hitler wanted returned to Germany.
