The original version of this article contained several factual errors. Sen. Maria Cantwell’s title at RealNetworks was misstated; she was a senior vice president. The maximum value of her current credit card debt is $50,000, not $150,000. Her assets last year were at least, not almost, $1.1 million. The minimum net worth she reported during her first year in the Senate was $5.56 million, not $11.9 million. The correct figure covered the year before her swearing-in; the story implied it was for 2001. The value of RealNetworks’ stock in 2000 should have been described as reaching above $90. Since 2000, Cantwell’s campaign has repaid her a minimum of $58,500 in interest, not $94,000. Link

The Sept. 11 article “Craig’s Lawyer Argues Before Appeals Court” incorrectly stated that Sen. Larry Craig tried to enter a guilty plea after Roll Call broke the story of his arrest in 2007. Craig tried to change his plea to not guilty.

The May 27 article “Schaffer May Testify at Sentencing” incorrectly stated that Bill Orr, accused of misusing funds from a 2002 earmark, had been found guilty at the time of publication. His trial had not yet concluded. Orr has since been convicted of 24 of 28 counts in the case.

The May 19 article “Campaign Work Pays Off for Aides” incorrectly reported that David Wade, communications director for Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), had paid back money to the campaign after being “alerted by Roll Call” to the possibility that he earned more outside income than he was allowed. In fact, Wade had been alerted to the the problem by the Senate Ethics Committee and had resolved the matter before Roll Call inquired.

Our obsessive cataloging of corrections occasionally enables us to spot a pattern. Whether it’s the failure of newspapers to identify someone they initially misidentified in a photo, or the inability of newspapers to accurately report on, well, newspapers, we sometimes feel as though we’re listening to a broken record. Such was the case when we spotted this correction in the Washington Post:

A May 14 article about Sen. John McCain’s speech at Liberty University incorrectly referred to the chairman of Focus on the Family as the Rev. James Dobson. Dobson is not an ordained minister.

We knew we’d read that one before. (The GetReligion blog also felt a sense of deja vu.) So we fired up Nexis, did a search for “James Dobson and correction,” and were less than shocked to turn up more than 20 similar corrections going back to 1989. What publication ran that 1989 correction, you ask? The Washington Post. GetReligion also spotted two recent Newsweek corrections that we have included below.
