In a story published on Page 3 of the Ottawa Sun Wednesday, Grace Xin was reported as having said that she came to Ottawa because “people like herself from southern China chose Ottawa because they’d like a break from the heat and crime.” In fact, Xin said she choose Ottawa because she would like to get a break from the heat and climate. She also appreciates that Ottawa is a safe and multicutural city in which to raise children.

A story in Friday’s Sun stated an Orleans woman was charged with the theft of a winning lottery ticket. In fact, it was not a winning ticket. The Sun regrets the error.

Paper fails sex ed

Erroneous information appeared in an article about condom safety in Sunday’s Sun. A quote from Dr. Eleanor Maticka-Tyndale should have said people must ensure there is no air in the tip of the condom. Air pockets contribute to breakage and slippage. Link

This correction also appeared int he Winnipeg Sun.

Who said what?

A March 1 Style article incorrectly stated that Keith Olbermann described Karl Rove as having “a head like a lump of unbaked bread dough.” That comment was made by Jon Stewart.

A Feb. 25 Style article incorrectly quoted President Obama as saying, “See, I know we can get some concessions in here,” during his address to a joint session of Congress. He said, “See, I know we can get some consensus in here.” Link to both

A pull-out quote on Page 4 of the Ottawa Sun in a story entitled Dangerous Liaisons was attributed to the wrong person. “It could be plying a woman with alcohol or … she may have been slipped a drug.” Dr. Janice Du Mont made this statement.
The article “Immortality 2.0″ (January-February 2009) contained two errors. The quote, “For those of us who don’t believe in God, this is a sort of religion,” was misattributed to Tyler Emerson of the Singularity Institute. Emerson is not the source of this quote and does not hold this view.

Speaking of reports you can’t trust…

In a July 6, 2008 column, Eric Margolis wrote “According to Israel’s media, (George W.) Bush even told Israel’s Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, that he could not trust America’s intelligence community and preferred to rely on Israeli intelligence.” Israeli media wrote President Bush had “serious doubts about the conclusions” in the U.S.’s National Intelligence Estimates, but did not specifically say he could not trust the reports. The same column was published, and subsequently corrected, by the Toronto Sun.

Tried in the press

David LeClair, the man who was shot and killed by a police officer in Gatineau on Saturday, did not plead guilty to fraud charges in February 2007 and did not serve time in jail. Incorrect information appeared in yesterday’s Sun.

This should end well

In a story published in the Wednesday edition of the Sun, it was reported needles can be used up to three times by injection drug users. However Dr. David Salisbury, the city’s chief medical officer of health, stresses needles shouldn’t be used multiple times. Salisbury strongly encourages drug users to get clean needles.

Apology

In a story published on Page 7 of the Thursday edition of the Ottawa Sun, it was incorrectly reported that an expert testified that OPP officers, involved in a fatal Nov. 2005 shooting, did not follow their training.
It was incorrectly stated that an OPP officer broke OPP rules regarding the shooting. It was also incorrectly reported that an OPP officer might have had a better view of the victim had he been in a different position.
The Sun apologizes for the errors.
