Contempt of court

IN THE article “Court castigates cop”, The Times yesterday incorrectly referred to the police officer accused of murdering Janet Odendaal as “Mhlari”. The article said Mhlari had been treated for alcohol abuse.
Mhlari is the magistrate who was hearing the matter. It is the accused, Sergeant Manape Kgoale, who was treated for alcohol abuse.

A review on Dec. 26 about “Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses,” a memoir by Claire Dederer, included a misattributed quotation. While Nietzsche was not one to shy away from home decorating tropes (“I cannot stand this motley wallpaper style,” he wrote of George Sand in “Twilight of the Idols”), he is not the author of the aphorism “Family love is messy, clinging, and of an annoying and repetitive pattern, like bad wallpaper” — that was another great philosopher, P. J. O’Rourke. Link

Not a contractor, not her quotes

A REPORT in The Australian on Thursday ("Boat horror kills up to 50'', page 1) incorrectly attributed quotes to Allison Millcock, as a contractor with the Shire of Christmas Island. Ms Millcock is not a contractor for the shire. The comments describing the tragedy as "bloody carnage'' and attacking people-smugglers as "bastards'' should have been attributed to another local on the island.

Paul Olson, president of the Nebraskans for Peace board, said immigration is an issue for Christians. He also said Nebraska is becoming a racist state that needs to interact with people of color. His quotes were incorrectly attributed to the Rev. Chuck Bentjen on Page B1 in Monday's Journal Star. Bentjen, director of Manna and Mercy Center for Faith in Public Life in Beatrice, said the immigration issue is complex and that conversations about it often are intense and divisive.

Apology

In this column on the state of sexuality in America, I mistakenly quoted Nicole Queathem as the author of a mock thesis rating the sexual performance of student athletes. The real author was Karen Owen, while Nicole was only quoted by the New York Times commenting on the thesis. I not only apologize here for the error but have personally contacted Nicole to apologize as well. Link

IN 'Mooncake sales booming despite higher prices this year' (BT, Sept 8), we quoted Regent Singapore spokeswoman Camilla Chiam as saying that there was a 'big hoo-hah' about higher mooncake ingredient prices and that the Regent Singapore had 'no choice' but to raise its mooncake prices. The two quotes are actually from another source. We are sorry for the error.

Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse said that Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele’s comments on the Afghanistan war put him “at odds with about 100 percent of the Republican Party.” The quote was incorrectly attributed to conservative commentator William Kristol in a July 3 U.S. News article about Mr. Steele’s remarks. IN a report in The Australian yesterday (“States revolt on health plan”, Page 1) NSW Premier Kristina Keneally was quoted as saying state bureaucrats were “livid” over lack of consultation on health reforms, and that their first hint of the reforms was the cancellation of bilateral discussions. In fact, these comments were not made by Ms Keneally but by a senior official who did not wish to be named.

Due to an editing error, a quote in a story last Saturday about Naomi Klein was wrongfully attributed to Avi Lewis. Mr. Lewis was not interviewed for the story. Link

A quotation on the perspectives page in the April 13 edition of NEWSWEEK incorrectly attributed an expletive to Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget, during his recent appearance on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” In fact, it was Stewart who uttered the swear word. We regret the error. Link

In some editions, a story about the filming of a made-for-TV tanker-truck explosion in San Francisco misattributed a quote. The spectator who responded to the question “What kind of person spends half a day waiting for a fake explosion?” by saying, “Losers. … You better put a ‘LOL’ laughing out loud after that,” should have been identified as Shane Gilman of San Francisco. A March 1 Style article incorrectly stated that Keith Olbermann described Karl Rove as having “a head like a lump of unbaked bread dough.” That comment was made by Jon Stewart.

A Feb. 25 Style article incorrectly quoted President Obama as saying, “See, I know we can get some concessions in here,” during his address to a joint session of Congress. He said, “See, I know we can get some consensus in here.” Link to both

A pull-out quote on Page 4 of the Ottawa Sun in a story entitled Dangerous Liaisons was attributed to the wrong person. “It could be plying a woman with alcohol or … she may have been slipped a drug.” Dr. Janice Du Mont made this statement.
The article “Immortality 2.0″ (January-February 2009) contained two errors. The quote, “For those of us who don’t believe in God, this is a sort of religion,” was misattributed to Tyler Emerson of the Singularity Institute. Emerson is not the source of this quote and does not hold this view.
