Miami Herald apologizes for mistaken Heat championship ad

A Macy’s advertisement featuring Miami Heat merchandise was mistakenly published June 13 on page 11D in some editions of The Miami Herald. We regret the error and apologize for any inconvenience.

The offending ad was for Heat championship merchandise (click for larger):

Kind of incredible, considering the Heat wouldn’t have been champions even if they had won Sunday night’s game. The paper also issued a press release (via Romenesko):

The Miami Herald apologizes for mistaken ad featuring Miami HEAT merchandise in Monday’s newspaper
MIAMI, FL – The Miami Herald has apologized to its readers for a Macy’s ad that appeared in some editions of Monday’s newspaper erroneously congratulating the Miami HEAT on becoming 2011 NBA champions.
The HEAT lost to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6 of the Finals.
“The Miami Herald deeply regrets the error,” said Alex Villoch, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Advertising. “We apologize for any inconvenience to our readers, and to Macy’s.”
The ad in the Sports section featured official Miami HEAT merchandise available at Macy’s. The ad had been prepared in advance and was intended for use after Game 7 in the event of a HEAT win.

Sorry, that’s incorrect

The name of the elementary school winner of Thursday’s Miami Herald Spelling Bee was misspelled. Reva Dixit won first place at the competition for Miami-Dade and Monroe students. Link

In the Jan. 31 Business Monday, an article about the global interactive agency SapientNitro incorrectly stated the firm was working with Wikipedia. A company spokesperson said he misspoke, intending to mention Sneakerpedia, a website for Foot Locker. Link

A column by Fred Grimm in Thursday's edition of The Herald erroneously reported that former state Republican Party Executive Director Delmar Johnson had been charged with a crime in connection with the party spending scandal. Johnson has not been charged. Link

A story on the Chu Vue murder trial on page B1 Thursday mischaracterized a portion of Vue's testimony by saying he had not responded to one question. Vue answered "no" when asked if he masterminded the killing of his wife's lover.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was misspelled Monday in The Week Ahead column on the front of the Local section. The rolling hot dog will be in South Florida on Thursday, noon at UM and 3 p.m. at FIU, looking for drivers. Link

A story in Sunday’s Miami Herald incorrectly stated that Broward Mayor Stacy Ritter voted to shift millions of dollars in insurance risk from the owners of the Florida Panthers to the public at a time her husband lobbied for a Panthers-affiliated company. Ritter was not at the meeting when the measure passed. We regret the error. Link

An article on Sunday’s front page about a fatal shooting Friday night in Liberty City erroneously said Brandon Mills, one of the two teens killed, had been arrested in 2006. The arrest record belonged to another Brandon Mills, who was not involved in Friday’s incident. In the same article, the name of Miami Fire Department spokesman Ignatius Carroll was misspelled. Link

A correction from Dave Barry

In yesterday’s column about badminton, I misspelled the name of Guatemalan player Kevin Cordon. I apologize. In my defense, I want to note that in the same column I correctly spelled Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarak, Poompat Sapkulchananart and Porntip Buranapraseatsuk. So by the time I got to Kevin Cordon, my fingers were exhausted. Link (correction at bottom)
