A letter to the editor:

I wish to refer to the story in last Saturday’s ‘Rolling Back the Years’ supplement recalling the Kerry Babies saga and the Independent Newspapers team coverage of the tribunal at Tralee.
The writer refers to his “now deceased colleagues, Dick Cross and Noel Smith”. Sadly, Noel has left us to enjoy the company of angels but I am happy to reveal Dick Cross is still here and very much alive in our land of financial rogues and suffering saints!
In addition, I can safely say in my 28 years working in the South-West Region for Independent Newspapers, there was never an occasion when my copy needed to be re-typed to make it ‘pristine’. And the same applied to the late, great and legendary Limerick-based Noel Smith.

In the Irish Independent Sports Section on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 allegations were published about a person, whom we now know as Oliver Scully of Kilkeeran, Portarlington, Co Offaly.
The Irish Independent unreservedly apologies for any impression given of any improper behaviour, misconduct or otherwise on the part of Mr Scully, who was a mentor in a county semi-final in a game at O’Connell Park, Tullamore, between the Ballinamere-Durrow junior ‘B’ hurlers and Gracefield GAA club in or about October 2009.
The Irish Independent recognises the very good work done by persons such as Oliver Scully, who give selflessly of their time on a voluntary basis in the training of youth teams.
It further recognises the hurt caused to Oliver Scully by the publication in the Irish Independent an excerpt from the book: ‘Life, Death & Hurling’ by Michael Duignan & Pat Nolan. Link

Apology and retraction

In Eugene McGee’s article on Monday, August 15, 2011, headed ‘DIRT ON THE SOLE OF THEIR SHOE’ concerning the CCCC’s decision concerning Wexford goalkeeperAnthony Masterson, it was incorrectly stated that the above-mentioned CCCC members were involved in deliberations which led to that decision. In fact, these CCCC members had no involvement whatsoever in such deliberations.
Messrs Murphy, Delaney, Prenty and Fitzgerald, CEOs of the provincial councils, are not involved at all in CCCC disciplinary matters. Messrs McGill, Doherty and Smith are only involved in such matters in an administrative capacity and have no deliberative role.
We are aware that many of the comments made in that article have caused deep hurt and distress to those concerned. These are people who strive to promote the GAA and who work tirelessly on its behalf. They are also committed to the application of the GAA Official Guide fairly and consistently.
We therefore now formally retract the comments insofar as they were directed at the above-named persons and unreservedly apologise to them for the deep hurt and distress caused by the content of our article. Link

Fun with photos

A story with the headline ‘Lingerie buyer at BTs settles case over dismissal’ published in yesterday’s Irish Independent was accompanied by a photograph captioned ‘Former Brown Thomas buyer Mary Mullin leaves the High Court in Dublin’. In fact, the photograph was that of Ms Aoife Newton, solicitor for IBEC. We are happy to clarify this matter. Link

Apology

In yesterday's edition, we incorrectly published a photograph of Brian Arkins, pictured above, in connection with a report about a court case in which serious criminal convictions were recorded against John Patterson (54) of Mourne Road, Drimnagh, Dublin.

Our picture caption incorrectly described Mr Arkins as Mr Patterson. Mr Arkins has no connection whatsoever with either Mr Patterson or the court case in which Mr Patterson was prosecuted for the criminal offences in question.

We wish to draw our readers' attention to this error.

We apologise to Mr Arkins unreservedly for this mistake and for the distress that it has caused to him.

In an article in our edition of November 18, we reported that the businessman Donal Kinsella had been awarded EUR10m libel damages by a High Court jury against Kenmare Resources Plc, over a press release issued by that company. In that article we stated that the press release "followed an incident in which he had sleepwalked into the room" of the company secretary during a company trip to Mozambique in May 2007. We wish to clarify that Mr Kinsella did not sleepwalk into the room of the company secretary and we apologise to Mr Kinsella for this statement.

IN the edition of the Irish Independent of Saturday, October 10, under the headline: ‘Coughlan: I was powerless to stop board giving car to Molloy’, Tanaiste Mary Coughlan is quoted as saying that a FAS board member, Mr Niall Saul, had told her that the issue of former director general Rody Molloy’s car was going to be discussed at a meeting of the board. It has been brought to our attention that the Tanaiste did not say this. What she said was that she had heard Mr Saul discussing the matter in a recent radio interview.
We fully accept that Mr Saul had no involvement whatsoever in the negotiation of Mr Molloy’s package, or discussions of any sort with the Tanaiste or any of her officials on that topic at any point. We note that Mr Saul was not present at the FAS Board meeting at which Mr Molloy’s package was discussed. We further recognise that in the radio interview, Mr Saul was merely offering an opinion on the issue of such severance packages in general, based on his professional experience in dealing with such matters. We regret the error and apologise to Mr Saul for any embarrassment caused. Link

Additional pain and suffering

In a report published in yesterday’s Irish Independent on the death of Ranelagh solicitor Nora Gallagher we published a picture purporting to be Ms Gallagher.
It has now been brought to our attention that this picture is not of Ms Gallagher. We regret the distress and upset caused by the erroneous publication of this picture. Link

Not fair use

On the Letters Page of the Irish Independent on Thursday, July 23 last, a picture was used featuring a girl walking in a forest. This was a photograph entitled ‘Girl in Forest’ from the exhibition ‘No Directions’ by Anthony Byrne in the Back Loft gallery last March. We apologise to Mr Byrne for the unauthorised use of the photograph and acknowledge that he holds all copyright and licensing for it.

IN last week’s issue we carried a report on Niall Mellon which included a statement that he had “angrily denied” reports that some of the houses built by the Niall Mellon Township Trust (NMTT) in South Africa were being rented out by their new owners.
This statement by the Sunday Independent was totally incorrect. In fact, the opposite happened. Mr Mellon dealt with that report in an (RTE) radio interview by openly confirming that between 2 and 4 per cent of the houses built were subsequently let by occupants who needed the money to fund their children’s education or for other vital purposes.
These houses have improved the lives for many poor South Africans and the charity would like us to express their appreciation for the efforts of the thousands of Irish volunteers and supporters of the charity who have helped make this project such a success.
We apologise for any hurt or embarrassment caused by our error, which we are happy to correct.

Sorry, Dahling

In our article on November 5, headed”Fur furore”, we said that Sophie Dahl had not posed for photographs with fans at her book signing. We accept that Ms Dahl did pose for photographs taken by fans but declined photographs with photographers who had earlier photographed her being harassed by anti-fur protesters. She would like it known that she has never accepted modelling contracts for fur. We are happy to clarify this matter.

In reporting on the recent Annual General Meeting of Kenmare Resources plc we incorrectly attributed to the company secretary a certain statement concerning Donal Kinsella. We apologise to Donal Kinsella for the distress and upset caused by such reporting.

The offending story is still online, and it lacks the (rather vague) apology.
