AN ARTICLE published in news.com.au on November 9 reported an interview with the Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Bank, Sir Ralph Norris, concerning the bank's decision to raise its home loan mortgage rate by 0.45 per cent.

One statement linked two themes that arose during the interview – the health of the banking system and the possibility of foreclosures.

News.com.au accepts that Sir Ralph Norris did not join these two themes in one attributable statement.

It was not intended to suggest that Sir Ralph Norris was indifferent to the plight of those who may be in danger of losing their homes.

News.com.au apologises to Sir Ralph Norris for any harm or embarrassment he may have suffered. Link

This above also appeared in the Herald Sun and the Advertiser. Here's the letter that led to the apology:

I would like to correct the misconception created by The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday 9th November that I believe "it is better to see a few foreclosures than have an economy hamstrung by a low profit banking system".

This is completely untrue. I did not say this.

The Daily Telegraph has falsely created the impression that I am indifferent to the current difficulties faced by some Australian families. This could not be further from the truth.

The fact is that over the last 2 years we have assisted thousands of Australian families to remain in their homes.

The Commonwealth Bank has a history of supporting Australian families for nearly 100 years and an excellent assistance programme available to our customers who may be experiencing financial difficulty.

On December 5 and 6, 2007, and later on August 30, 2008, the Herald Sun, under a previous Editor-in-Chief, published a series of articles concerning Mr Sean Buckley, the head of Ultra Tune Australia, with regard to his alleged dealings with a criminal and underworld identity.

The Herald Sun now accepts that the articles regarding these dealings contained factual errors that were not able to be independently verified by the Herald Sun at the time. The Herald Sun apologises to Sean Buckley and his family for the hurt, upset and embarrassment caused to him and his family by the publications.

All Russian tennis players are alike

An article titled “Ban For Russian Player” in last week’s Sunday Herald Sun about Ekaterina Bychkova’s (top) recent ban for match-fixing offences was accompanied incorrectly by a photograph of tennis player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Sunday Herald Sun apologises for the error, which resulted from an incorrect caption supplied by an international photo agency. Pavlyuchenkova (bottom) is a rising tennis star who beat Jelena Jankovic on her way to an Indian Wells semi-final and beat Venus Williams twice in a week at the end of last year.

We Goofy-ed.
A story and photo caption in Monday’s paper confused two long-eared, beloved Disney cartoon characters. We said Goofy, but we meant Pluto.

Apology

AN ARTICLE published on July 20 stated that Chris Evert admitted in an interview to having an affair with Greg Norman while both were married to their previous partners, and the affair caused the demise of their marriages.
That article was incorrect because Ms Evert did not make that admission.
The Sunday Mail apologises to Ms Evert and Mr Norman for the error.

This was also published in Australia’s Sunday Herald Sun and Sunday Times.

“Get Your Act Together” indeed

LAST week’s article on tax, Get Your Act Together by Mike Hanley, contained some inaccuracies.
A tax return is usually between 17 and 48 pages, not up to 180 pages as stated.
The Medicare rebate provides a 20 per cent refund of out of pocket medical expenses over $1500.
The article stated that the Medicare levy is calculated on taxable income above $6000. This was incorrect.
The Medicare levy is calculated on the entire taxable income, unless you earn less than $16,284, in which case the levy is waived.

Last week’s Sunday Herald Sun carried an opinion piece by Melbourne academic Anisa Buckley. The headline attached to the article indicated Ms Buckley was in favour of adopting some aspects of Islamic Sharia law in Australia. The Sunday Herald Sun wishes to affirm that Ms Buckley is not in favour of the adoption of Sharia law.
