ON December 6 under the headline Xmas dinner Is On pounds 1m Lotto Win Coach, we wrongly reported that Mr Paul Trainor (right) had won a pounds 1million Lottery prize. In fact the prize was won by another person.
Mr Trainor does not work at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, nor did he buy a turkey-dinner for work colleagues or say the he was going to buy a new car. We are happy to correct the position and apologise to Mr Trainor for any embarrassment or confusion caused as a result.

A PICTURE accompanying our story about window cleaner Graeme Dust,who was jailed for six years for trying to have his wife NIna killed, was not of her but was, in fact, a photograph of a person with no involvement in the case. A normally reliable agency supplied the photograph of a lady we have since learned is Mrs Sam Brand. We would liketo apologise to Mrs Brand and her family for any distress caused by this error. (Page 26, October 29).

UK’s Trinity Mirror papers launch page two corrections columns

On the heels of the Daily Mail starting a new corrections column, Trinity Mirror papers the Daily Mail, Birmingham Mail, South Wales Echo, Western Mail and Huddersfield Examiner announced they too would be using page two to display corrections. Here’s the note to readers from the Mail:

The same note was published by the Huddersfield Examiner and others. The Daily Mirror made one slight alteration to the text to note that it was moving its existing corrections section to page two:

Sorry for saying your dead daughter abused drugs and engaged in casual sex

ON August 3 this year the Daily Mirror published an article regarding the death of Miss Catherine Zaks, aged 21, in Krakow, Poland.
The article contained claims that Miss Zaks, from Robertsbridge, East Sussex, abused drugs and had engaged in casual sex following the break-up of a long-term relationship.
Miss Zaks’ parents have pointed out that these claims are entirely false and that their daughter was much loved, and of good character.
We are happy to set the record straight and apologise for any distress caused.

Bad for business

In an article headlined “Customs bust EUR11m illegal fuel factory” on page 23 of yesterday’s Irish Daily Mirror, we featured a photograph of a truck with an Emo oil logo.
A spokeswoman for the fuel company has asked us to clarify Emo had absolutely no involvement in the seizure or subsequent searches.
The truck featured is an old one that has not been owned by the company for more than 10 years and the current owners have no right to use the logo.
We are happy to clarify the matter.

Fake Bin Laden photo picked up by U.K. press

At least five British newspapers and one broadcaster used a fake photo of a dead Bin Laden in their coverage. Tabloid Watch has a gallery showing each paper, and here’s the example from the Mirror:

The offending papers include the Sun, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and Times of London. The broadcaster was Sky News. Here’s a blog post from a Telegraph editor that explains why the photo is fake.

Here’s the Los Angeles Times saying that no photos of a dead Bin Laden have been released:

According to Pentagon officials, photos of Bin Laden’s dead face do exist but those widely distributed on the Internet are fake. At some point, if only to convince die-hard Bin Laden followers, officials are expected to release a corpse photo, as has been done in the past when famous villains such as Che Guevara and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein were killed or captured. Additionally, such special ops are typically videotaped by mini-helmet cams to document a sensitive mission and assist in debriefing and future training.

ON September 22 we reported that Natasha Kaplinksky failed to clean up her dog’s droppings and had to be told to do so by the Police. In fact, Natasha, cleaned up the mess herself without prompting. We are sorry for this error.

IN YESTERDAY’S Irish Daily Mirror we incorrectly identified a man in a picture with the late Kellie Devlin as her boyfriend Shane Sheridan. In fact, it is her brother Darren Devlin. We would like to apologise to Kellie’s family for any upset and confusion the error may have caused them.

IN YESTERDAY’S Scottish Daily Mirror we ran a picture of Gordon Pirie, who died in a road accident.
This was mistakenly captioned as driver Keith Marquis. We regret the error and apologise for any distress this caused to Mr Pirie’s family.

The Morien Jones apologies, cont. again

It’s been a while since we saw an apology for Morien Jones, a UK man who was the subject of a string of hurtful and incorrect articles in the British press. Well, thanks to a recent court decision related to the story, we have two more to add. Read the others and get the background here.

ON 25 and 26 May 2006 we published articles concerning the unsuccessful prosecution of Lynett Burgess for indecent exposure. The articles suggested that her neighbour Mr Jones had filmed her sunbathing naked in her garden. In fact, Ms Burgess was filmed on behalf of Mr Jones by his builder on police advice. Ms Burgess was filmed walking naked on the driveway in front of Mr Jones’s house and not in her own garden. We apologise to Mr Jones for the error and for any misleading impression given of Mr Jones. In the article below we incorrectly accused Morien Jones of videotaping his neighbour whilst she sunbathed naked in her back garden and reporting her to the police. In fact, Mr Jones’ neighbour was filmed on police advice in the context of a possible court action against her whilst she was walking naked on his driveway. We apologise to Mr Jones for our error.
