A bit different

cpThe Canadian Press erroneously reported Wednesday that university researchers published a paper alleging Imperial Tobacco Canada destroyed seven million pages of research that included decades worth of studies on the effects of smoking. In fact, the researchers said they looked at 60 reports that were among seven million pages of documents from British American Tobacco and its subsidiaries (which would include Imperial Tobacco) that were released by a United States court, and that the 60 reports had been among documents destroyed. cpThe Canadian Press moved a story April 3 that erroneously reported The Wilkins Ice Shelf was originally part of Jamaica. In fact the Ice Shelf, located on the western side of the Antarctic was originally the size of Jamaica.

Tried in the press

A Canadian Press story that appeared in the Star Nov. 27 erroneously reported that Barenaked Ladies front man Steven Page was convicted on drug charges earlier this year. In fact, a New York state judge ruled that charges against Page would be dismissed provided he receives therapy, passes a drug screening and is not arrested again. Link

In a story that appeared in yesterday’s 24 hours, The Canadian Press erroneously reported that Peel Regional Police Const. J.P. Valade said the 16-year-old victim of a stabbing at a Brampton high school was stabbed four times in the neck and side. In fact, that information did not come from Valade.

That’s a lot of poo

In yesterday’s Spectator, The Canadian Press erroneously reported that a Quebec company plans to use 30,000 diapers to create about 11,000 tonnes of diesel fuel. In fact, to create that amount of fuel, the company requires 30,000 tonnes of diapers, which is about one-quarter of the diapers that end up in landfills in Quebec yearly. Link
