Regret the Error

An obituary on Dec. 28 about Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan, misstated the location of her detention at the time her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the former president and prime minister, was hanged by the military authorities in April 1979. It was a deserted police training camp at Sihala, Pakistan, a few miles from the Rawalpindi District Jail where her father was hanged; she was not under house arrest.
The obituary also misstated a precedent set by Ms. Bhutto when she attended Oxford University, where she gained a B.A. in 1976. She was the first Asian woman — not the first woman — to become president of the Oxford Union, the prestigious debating society.
And the obituary overstated what is known about the August 1988 military plane crash in southern Pakistan that killed Gen. Mohammad Zia ul-Haq, the Pakistani ruler who had ordered Mr. Bhutto’s execution. While investigators suspected sabotage, it was never established that the plane exploded. Link
