New Hampshire and Vermont’s* Valley News could be a favorite for 2008’s Typo of the Year, thanks to it misspelling its own name on the front page on July 21. It published an editor’s note yesterday. Here’s what the paper looked like on the 21:
Many thanks to Ed for bringing it to my attention. He also provided me with a close-up scan of the front page, and the editor’s note:

*Correction July 23: This post originally said that the Valley News is based in Vermont. Though its mailing address is a P.O Box in Vermont and the paper in is distributed in that state, it is actually located in New Hampshire. Thanks, Dave!

The Valley News is actually based in Lebanon, N.H., on the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River, although it circulates widely on the Vermont side as well.
Blame the Summer Interns :-)
A typo in your correction? You write:
Though its mailing address is a P.O Box in Vermont and the paper in distributed in that state, it is actually located in New Hampshire. Thanks, Dave!
Shouldn’t it be:
Though its mailing address is a P.O Box in Vermont and the paper is distributed in that state, it is actually located in New Hampshire. Thanks, Dave!
This is just great :P
That’s the newspaper I get. I’m totally gonna keep that issue :D
I work at a magazine, and our magazine’s name appears as a logo created by the art department.
I proofread it letter-by-letter in every issue, and get chuckled at by the art department and the other editors.
I guess I’ll keep checking obsessively.
(I’m not sure if this is worse than the time Ms. magazine misspelled “feminism” on the cover.)
is some one at the valley news now looking for a new job?
Is their profo reeder on vacation?
Great publicity for the paper surely?
But not long before someone’s looking for a head to roll.
Isn’t there a more mature way to deal with mistakes than this?

I thought the usual stuff was a saved template. Either on computer and/or already set at the printers and would have to be purposefully changed - not mistakenly created.
Maybe it’s was a disgruntled employee or “inside joke” - New SS, like a neo-fascist paper.
I proofread a magazine which is aimed at high-earning professionals.
The thing that drove me mad was that they missed out an apostrophe in their tagline on the front cover of every issue. I approached the editor about it and he told me that it was a deliberate omission as they didn’t like the way it looked on the design! I was quite embarrassed to have my name mentioned in the editorial credits, but thankfully, they have now changed the words and no longer require an apostrophe.
“Good Job” for the editor
