Newsweek has now retracted the story with this one sentence statement from editor Mark Whitaker: "Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story that
an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse at
Guantanamo Bay," (For background read our previous post here.)
Whitaker is very specific about what
they are and aren’t retracting. They are retracting the
story that "an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse at
Guantanamo Bay." But they aren’t retracting the idea that the Qur’an was used as a tool in interrogations.
Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but this retraction suggests to us that Newsweek might dedicate some staff
resources to see if they can find anyone to confirm the
allegation that the Qur’an was indeed desecrated during interrogations. As sick
as it may seem, that’s really the only way for the magazine to clear its
name in this mess. This retraction leaves the door open for them to do so. We’ll see what happens.
