We’re number two!

columbus-dispatchOn Sunday, the Columbus Dispatch did a little horn tooting:

The Dispatch’s photo staff was named the best in Ohio by the Ohio News Photographers Association, which concluded its annual judging yesterday at Kent State University.
The photo staff won the honor by winning the most top honors in the overall competition, including best picture usage for newspapers with circulations above 100,000 …

On Monday, it did a little correcting:

The photography staff at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland was named the best in Ohio by the Ohio News Photographers Association. Because of incorrect information supplied to The Dispatch, an incorrect winner was announced on Page B3 of yesterday’s Metro & State section.

And explaining:

Turns out this photo finish didn’t tell the real story. The Plain Dealer of Cleveland was awarded photography staff of the year honors Saturday at the conclusion of the annual Ohio News Photographers Association contest judging at Kent State University.
Nothing terribly strange about that, but initially the ONPA said that The Dispatch photo staff had won top honors, as we dutifully reported on Page B3 of yesterday’s Metro & State section.
Problem was, contest organizers had made a mistake in tabulating the vote in initially announcing a winner. The Dispatch‘s staff actually finished second.

Thanks, Bob!

Just FYI. The Dispatch ran the story on an inside Metro page, didn’t tease out front, though it was in the Speed Read on page 2A. The paper has way too many silly errors, but it looks like this got dumped in their lap by someone who couldn’t count votes in their own contest. No need to reply, just wanted to give the devil his due here.
