Regret the Error

We attributed the quotation “Pecunia non olet” (money has no smell) to Horace. In fact it was the Roman historian Dio Cassius who recorded the reply made by the Emperor Vespasian to complaints about a tax on public lavatories. As a result, public urinals in France have been known as “vespasiennes” (Show us the money, 11 February, page 30). Link
