One thing this misses out on, and is key to why Gallop was so sure of their numbers, is that at the time telephones were not a common household commodity/utility. Gallop over did its polling of those with phones, the very people who would be voting for Dewey.

The very same kind of thing happened with polls concerning the recent election. There was a poll that showed 12% for GOP candidate gains, but it was flawed by ignoring cell phone users. The polls that included cell phone users actually matched the actual election outcomes within a very slim margin of error. How slim? Well, the outcome and the polls that matched both had 6%, 50% of what that other useless poll had.

In later years, the publishers of the Tribune were able to laugh about the blunder. As the 25th anniversary of the 1948 election approached, the Tribune had planned to give Truman a plaque containing a replica of the erroneous banner headline. However, Truman died on December 26, 1972, before the gift could be bestowed.<br>The Tribune was not the only paper to make the mistake. The Journal of Commerce had eight articles in its November 3 edition about what could be expected of President Dewey. The paper's five-column headline read, "Dewey Victory Seen as Mandate to Open New Era of Government-Business Harmony, Public Confidence.

This article is very good - but Samuel J. Tilden vs. Hayes 1876 is still America's most disputed election ever. If you read the book I wrote "Samuel Tilden the Real 19th President" you would know that Tilden won the popular vote by over 254,000 votes and lost the election by just ONE stolen Electoral College vote. Yes, newspaper's did print the headlines that Tilden won - because he did win...but in the middle of the night the Managing Editor of the New York Times, John Reid and his editorial staff were so angry at Tilden's win - they wrote an editorial with a headline, "Election in Doubt"...They knew the state's of LA, SC and FL were still under reconstruction after the Civil War...and under Republican control. Reid rode his carriage over to Republican headquarters and woke up the drunken Republican Chairman to tell him his plan...The Chairman thought Reid was insane - but allowed him to telegraph the 3 states at 5 a.m. with a message to them "HOLD YOUR STATE"...The election dispute went on up until the day President Hayes was snuck into the back door of the White House to be sworn into the Presidency in secret... And yes, a second Civil War almost did start over this election...and we may very well be on the verge of an uprising that hasn't been seen since 1876. No matter who wins tonight - FIFTY percent are going to be furious about it...I wrote the Tilden screenplay back in 1997 - built the Samuel Tilden dot com site - then decided to publish the story in 2006 because Hollywood was not interested...
I believed American VOTERS as well as our Washington leaders needed to understand how to and how not to handle election FRAUD and chaos at the polls when it happens...and how to avoid allowing the Supreme Court from choosing our Presidents. Most voters do not realize that our Presidents are not elected by the peoples' votes...but elected by the Electoral College votes...which in this election between Obama and McCain the Electors vote on December 15th. Much can happen between Nov. 4th until Dec. 15th...and in this election Obama has a case against him waiting decision by the Supreme Justices that will be decided before the Electors vote. Meaning Obama could win by a landslide and be booted by the Supreme court which is weighted with Republican Justices if they so deem the case against him valid.

As always, fascinating stuff. I'm only involved with news reporting as a consumer, but your blog consistently interests and excites me about good reporting, and entertains me with the cringeworthy bad reporting.

Copyedit nitpicks: I assume the paper was "dim on Dewey from the starT"? (And of course, that it is a "perfect" case study?)
