Good ol’ Shakesbeard

A column Wednesday on the Perspectives page by community columnist Jim Norton misquoted a line from William Shakespeare. The quote is “Now is the winter of our discontent,” not “This is the winter of our discontent.” Link

Interesting in that even the correction is essentially incorrect in that it misinterprets the passage, though the misinterpretation is overwhelmingly common. The full context makes it clear: “Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York.” Or, to rephrase, “The winter of our discontent turns into glorious summer…” — it completely changes the meaning.
