Sorry about the murder metaphor

Guardian_136
In a column headed Let teary pain turn to bongo-playing joy, page 20,
Sport, July 1, the writer, in a reference to the World Cup match
between Holland and Portugal, said: "Valentin Ivanov, the referee, made
the pitch his Hungerford, and with an insecure, itchy trigger finger
dispatched like a whimsical Michael Ryan." This was a totally
inappropriate and offensive metaphor, the use of which the Guardian
regrets. Sixteen people died after being shot by Ryan in the Berkshire
town of Hungerford in 1987; Ryan shot and killed himself.
