On Aug. 14, The News published a story about a former auxiliary bishop of the New York Archdiocese, James F. McCarthy, who was banned from public ministry in 2002 by the Vatican after it was revealed that he had had "improper sexual contact" with women. A telephone call to a "James McCarthy" in the small Dutchess County town where former Bishop McCarthy once lived was answered by a man who stated that he was the former bishop and told the Daily News he is now married and his wife is expecting a child. The News carried this information. An investigation has now established that the "James McCarthy" The News’ reporter spoke to was not the former bishop, as he had claimed. James F. McCarthy is still a priest, according to his attorney, and is unmarried.
